  • El Salvador liegt in Zentralamerika; Hauptstadt San Salvador (ca. 530.000 Einwohner)
  • Kleinstes Land in Zentralamerika; ca. 7, 3 Mio. Einwohner.
  • Staatsform: Republik, Staats- und Regierungschef: Mauricio Funes Cartagena (FMLN)
  • Sprachen: neben Spanisch indigene Sprachen, Nahua, Maya, Englisch
  • Währung: US-Dollar (seit 2001, Colón auslaufend)
  • Charakteristisch für die Landschaft in El Salvador: einige Vulkane sowie Hochebenen und Berge
  • Weltweit eine der höchsten Kriminalitätsraten, im Jahresdurchschnitt kommen jeden Tag 10 Menschen durch Tötungsdelikte um, hohe Bandenkriminalität, viele Kindesentführungen

  • Indianische Kulturen vor dem 16. Jahrhundert: Maya, Pipil ,Nahua
  • 1. Erfolgreicher Eroberungsversuch der Spanier: 1525
  • Seit 13.4.1839 Unabhängigkeit nach spanischer Besetzung
  • ab 1939 Militärdiktatur -> Massaker von La Matanza 1932, 30.000 vorallem indigene Menschen werden getötet, gilt als Ende der Existenz der indigenen Völker El Salvadors
  • Bürgerkrieg von 1980- 1991
  • 24.März 1980 wurde der Erzbischof Óscar Romero ermordet, da er sich gegen die Militärdikatur stellte
  • Massaker von El Mozote 1981, Massenmord an ca. 900 Zivilisten durch Regierungssoldaten
  • 1992: Friedensvertrag
  • Heute: Demokratie

  • BIP: 2009: 21, 1 Mrd. US $, Anteil Dienstleistungen 61%, Industrie 26%, Landwirtschaft 12%
  • Arbeitslosigkeit 2008: ca. 5,5 %, hohe Unterbeschäftigung
  • Importgüter: Chemische Erzeugnisse, Erdöl, Textilien, Elektronik, Maschinen, Getreide

  • Globale Wirtschaftskrise traf das Land hart, BIP schrumpfte 2009 um 3,5 %
